ABOUT...

A Summer in 1993 in Spanish Harlem finally reveals the secret past of Cuban-American cardiac nurse Negra Centron. A childhood secret torments the life and stifles the growth of a beautiful woman. The ancient religion of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, known as Regla de Ocha and Santeria in the Diaspora, is the engine behind this supernatural mystery thriller. This African-evolved religion, with its magic, is the backdrop for this tale of love, hate, deceit, betrayal, obsession, forgiveness, acceptance, and hope. Magic, ritual, and destiny are the threads unraveling this gripping, edgy, mystery/thriller.

Pressured by a suspicious mother, a strange bed-fellow, and an amorous co-worker, Negra battles to keep a childhood secret from unraveling while a restless spirit and the African gods seek justice...

PRESALE TIX ON SALE NOW ONLY $15 LIMITED TIME ONLY BEFORE INCREASE!!!

"A Wound In Time" is very intense and unearths long ignored social issues. However, it does have it's funny, and downright hilarious moments. But the intense essence of the play has forced some cast members to break down in just a read through. Which shows the power of it's words, and more importantly, the openness to experience of it's actors. As I must remind you, the true actor does not want to "act" but wants to experience, and share that experience with the audience! I say you're in for a real EXPERIENCE! I am so pleased with my cast. Bravo y'all!

AND YES, I'M GONNA BE ON A REALITY TV SHOW TOO...

If you've read the bottom of this blog you'd know that I LOVE to dance and that it was dancing that helped pull me out of a depression I suffered after 9/11, thus enabling me to resume work on my creative projects left dormant for years. Soooo, I will be auditioning for the new Paula Abdul Dance Show that will air on CBS. Like "American Idol" the audition process will be taped for TV. I did submit a tape but I won't dare post it here. At least not yet... Check back regularly as I will be posting more stuff on what the rest of the cast has been up to.

BTW by clicking the title of this blog you will be sent straight to Nuyorican Poets Cafe's website to purchase tickets for "A Wound In Time".

REVISED "A WOUND IN TIME" SCREENPLAY ENTERS GOTHAM SCREEN FESTIVAL

Revised screenplay adaption of "A Wound In Time" will be entered into the Gotham Screen Film Fesitval. This is a REAL New York festival that I wanted to enter last year but missed the deadline. The screenplay adaptation was a semifinalist and a quarterfinalist in 2 of the 3 festivals it was entered into last year. I was recently notified by one of the festivals, as a quarterfinalist, that semifinalists will be announced next week. I totally thought they had chosen their winners by now and was surprised. But I am looking forward to the Gotham with my new revisions of adding more visuals. Stay tuned...

CHECK OUT W.E.T. PRODUCTIONS: THE WALKING PRODUCTION COMPANY

Greetings! As the writer, producer, and director of "A Wound In Time" my goal is to educate through the Arts. To give back in some way, by providing little known facts about a people, a culture, or social issue, it is hoped, would in turn empower and unite. Through the years I have created many projects with the ultimate goal being to inform. I have supported these projects using my own funds by working 3 jobs and then trying to find the time to create. But I LOVE the struggle and I LOVE to create. It just makes the accomplishment more appreciated. So peruse my various projects, most of which I will have to revisit to complete, as Actor, Play/Screen Writer, Poet, Documentary Producer, Director, and tee shirt and jewelry designer. Just click the title above to go to the site. For tickets click the titles of any other blog below. Thanks!

WHY "A WOUND IN TIME"?

Although I am an American of African descent (aka multi-ethnic) I never wanted to write a so-called "Black play" but always wanted to write a play about PEOPLE who "happened" to be of a given ethnic group. Therefore "A Wound In Time" has characters from diverse ethnic, social, cultural, religious, and sexually oriented groups. It also deals with the social issues that arise in diversity. "A Wound In Time" is political in that sense, and it is high drama in the sense of the Greek Tragedy.

SYNOPSIS AND CHARACTER BREAKDOWN FOR THIS MONTH'S AUDITIONEES

Pre-sale tix only $20 on sale in August @ http://www.nuyorican.org

A summer in 1993 in Spanish Harlem, a very different Spanish Harlem from today, finally reveals the secret past of Cuban-American Negra Centron. A childhood secret torments the life and stifles the growth of a beautiful woman. To protect her secret, she becomes strange bedfellows with Tony Perez, a notorious womanizer and small time hustler; to the dismay of those her lover her most, namely, her mother Millie and best friend Chee Chee.

The ancient religion of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, known as Santeria and Candomble in the Americas, is the engine behind this dramatic three act play. This African-evolved religion and its magic is the backdrop for this tale of love, hate, deceit, homophobia, intra-racism, classicism and betrayal. Magic, ritual, and destiny are the threads unraveling this mystery/supernatural/drama.
As a three act play it won two staged readings and actor Ella Joyce originated the role of Carmen 20 years ago. It has finally been revised as a play, and adapted as a screenplay recently placing semi finalist and quarter finalist in two international film festivals.

AWIT TEASER: NEGRA CENTRON AND DR. TODD ADAMS

Pre-sale tix only $20 on sale in August @ http://www.nuyorican.org

A very large condo in a luxury building on Manhattan's tony east side. It is nicely furnished with artwork and artifacts. There is a carved African figure on the mantel of the fireplace in the living room. There is a SPOT on NEGRA sitting on the floor amid a pile of pillows. TODD enters from SL with wine glass in hand...

TODD (HANDING NEGRA A DRINK)
Here's a fresh one.

NEGRA
Thanks.

TODD
You know, I still can't believe that you're here. I've been attempting to spend time outside of the hospital, seems like forever... Well, I finally did it!

NEGRA
Yes, we finally did it... The dinner was excellent. You're quite a chef. What else are you good at?

TODD (LAUGHING)
Woo! That's a loaded question!

NEGRA
O-kay... Let me rephrase that. What are your favorite past times?

TODD (TAKES CIGAR OUT OF BOX)
Well, I do like to cook, of course. It's kind of a hobby. I like tennis... Lousey at golf... Fond of French and English Lit. Travel quite a bit. Yes, I collect artifacts wherever I go. But my all time favorite is sailing.

NEGRA
Really. I've never gone sailing. Well, not real sailing. Been on the Circle Line, and Staten Island Ferry, though. My father--

NEGRA is visibly showing discomfort from the cigar smell.

TODD
Sailing... Now that's something special! A challenge that is relaxing and awe inspiring Get a good workout too! Are you alright or does the cigar bother you?

NEGRA
Oh, no-no. I just didn't know that you smoked cigars.

TODD
Ah, yes. After a good meal, a brandy, and nice company I like to indulge in a good cigar. (PUFFING AWAY) Don't tell the State Department, but this is from Cuba. (LAUGHS)

NEGRA (CLEARING THROAT)
So, you love the sea?

TODD
Yes, practically grew up on the sea. My family has sailed for generations. I hope one day we can share that. In fact, I'll be heading home to sail for the holiday. So, what about you?

NEGRA
Ah, I'd like that alot. Maybe someday...

TODD
I mean your favorite past time.

NEGRA
Oh, sorry. My life is pretty boring compared to yours.

TODD
I'm not asking you to compare our lives, NEGRA.

NEGRA
I don't get a chance to do much besides work.

TODD
Oh, we know how important your work is to you.

NEGRA
Well, once in a while I go to the movies or dancing with my best friend CHEE CHEE. My world is actually very small...

TODD
That's right! Your mother is in a wheelchair and you take care of her--

NEGRA
Well, actually I told a little fib on the phone that night. I was just kinda embarassed to invite you over because my place is not as nice as this... Just a room, really.

Tony Perez' best friend, and "partner in crime" is Bobby Vico. They grew up together around the corner from each other. But around Tony's corner was El Barrio, and around Bobby's corner was Little Italy. "A Wound In Time" takes plaace in the early 1990's. While today, Tony's corner has changed dramatically, Bobby V's corner remains pretty much the same...

ROMANCING THE HOOD...

Pre-sale tix only $20 on sale in August @ http://www.nuyorican.org

As I was writing 'A Wound In Time" I tried to capture the essence of the inner city. The essence being something of great beauty and intensity... Where exists a life force so strong, yet where the need to survive was always life or death. I remember, growing up in the South Bronx, hearing the distant beat of the conga drums on Summer nights. There was something that was very sensual about it. Just as there were stories of guys on street corners singing Doo Wop, there were the guys on the stoops, or in the park playing the congas to pass the time on hot nights. The distant sound of the congas is a memory that is so vivid and one that has stayed with me through the decades. For there is a paradoxical beauty to ghetto life. The struggle of making it through the next day; to the next pay check; to the next rent payment; the next meal, and the joy of dancing in the streets; of playing in the johnny pump; of neighbors knowing one another and their protective eyes watching the coming and going of strangers... For that was life in New York's inner city.

Though many things have changed in the inner city, the distant beat of the conga is a constant on hot Summer nights somewhere in Nueva York.

fine ass off up in here tonight!

NEGRA (SINGING)
"Aint no mountain high enough..." ...Remember the
night my-my father disappeared?

CHEE CHEE
Yeah, the night y’all had that big
party after Elsie’s communion?

NEGRA
Si. Big celebracion! It wasn’t
suppose to be such a big deal but
you know how it is when people in
the block smell a party, especially
in those days.

CHEE CHEE
I hear that, girl.(SINGING)"To keep me
to keep me from gettin’ to you!"

NEGRA
Mucho people. People were in and
out all night long. Soo much food
and booze... You remember how I was
back then... A bookworm and shit!
(LAUGING) You alll used to tease
me... Call me Mrs. Poindexter,
cause I didn’t hang out on the
Avenue or go to hookie parties--

CHEE CHEE (LAUGHING)
Shit! Sure do! You was SO quiet to
be SO pretty!

NEGRA (LAUGHING)
I was a lame, that’s what I was.

CHEE CHEE
Yep, and we used to call CLINTON,
you know CLINTON, whose mother
lives upstairs and bakes those good
’ol cakes...

NEGRA
Yeah, CLINTON WILLIAMS...

CHEE CHEE
Yeah, he used to have a block head!
We called him Poindexter and you
Mrs. Poindexter... You both were
so, so... studious!

NEGRA (LAUGHING)
Yeah, he was a lame too. He was at
the party that night lookin’ around
all strange and staring at people.
He was kinda weird... He still is
weird. He stopped by my house to
drop off some muffins for Mami.
He’s kinda cute now!

"AWIT" TEASER: NEGRA ,TONY & CLINTON/BANG! BANG!

Pre-sale tix only $20 on sale in August @ http://www.nuyorican.org

This is the scene where "woman magnet" in the play, Tony Perez, sings the Joe Cuba oldie "Bang! Bang!"... "Cornbread, hog maws, and chitlins... Cornbread!" Since I wrote the play, of course it is a favorite of mine. Take a listen below. Enjoy!

NEGRA walks toward the phone. CLINTON stands
blocking her.

CLINTON
LIKE you said... It’s late. She’s probably asleep.
Don’t wake her!

NEGRA
Yeah... Guess you’re right. Well...?

CLINTON
OH! Here, the muffins...

NEGRA (TAKES THE BAG)
Ummm... Smells good. Thanks. Have a seat. TONY'll be
back in a minute!

CLINTON
So... Seems like you two are inseparable since he got
out of prison. Don’t come around much, but it seems
like whenever I see you, TONY’S not far behind.

NEGRA
That is more fiction than fact, CLINTON.
CLINTON begins to space out again.

NEGRA
Are you alright? CLINTON? Are you well?

CLINTON
Ah... SURE! I’m good, good... Oh, I get it you’re like
Florence Nightengale! Guess being a nurse and all makes
you overly concerned... Kinda parenoid, perhaps? (WEIRD
LAUGH)

NEGRA
I wouldn’t say that--

TONY walks in with two six packs.

TONY
ALL RIGHT! Ice cold cervezas! Here ya go! (HANDING A
BEER TO CLINTON) So man, what you been up to?

CLINTON
Ah, the usual. Doin’ some consulting for the
government. Gotta fly over to Kuwait to do some
environmental tests. Then--

TONY cuts off CLINTON's bragard ramblings.

TONY (TO NEGRA)
PUT ON SOME MUSIC! (TO CLINTON) Yeah, go on man!

A popular song plays in the background.

CLINTON
Oh. Then I’m going to be heading down to NASA to do an
independent assess--

TONY sings and hums to the music drowning out
CLINTON.

TONY
CORNBREAD, HOG MAWS AND CHITLINS, CORNBREAD!

NEGRA
TONY!

CLINTON
Ahem... I better be going. Hope MISS MILLIE enjoys the
muffins. I have to drive all the way back to the Island
tonight, anyway.

NEGRA
Why drive back tonight? Why don’t you stay downstairs
at your mother’s?

CLINTON
NO! I -I can’t- don’t like to stay... here...

NEGRA stands and sees CLINTON to the door.

NEGRA
Oh. Well, okay CLINTON. Take it easy. Get home safe.
(TO TONY) You know, you have the manners of a--

TONY
FUCK DAT GUY!

NEGRA shakes her head in disbelief. She then heads
into the bathroom. TONY sits in anticipation. Counting...

TONY
One-two-three... Oh shit...

HANGIN' WITH THE ORIGINAL IYA CARMEN OF "A WOUND IN TIME" ELLA JOYCE

Presale tix only $20 on sale in August @ http://www.nuyorican.org

Except for Broadway, TV, and film I hadn't seen Ella Joyce in over 22 years when I was a resident playwright at R.A.P.P. Arts Theatre and she was a member of the acting pool. The very first staged reading of the play was back in the 1980's and Ella would read the role of the Santeria priestess Iya Carmen.

Last month Ella was in town (she's been living in LA for years now) performing her one woman show, "A Rose Among Thorns", at the Billie Holiday Theatre. The show was fantastic and her depiction of Rosa Parks was uncanny. Years ago Ella would do outreach with mutual friend, Walter Bryant, traveling and performing at prisons, hospitals etc. Her work as Rosa Parks makes evident that Ella has not forgotten her roots and that she continues to give back. Ella now has the new script and I am looking forward to collaborating again someday.

THANK YOU!!!!!

Last week I had a staged reading for the screenplay version of 'AWIT".  It was held at the beautiful Judson Memorial Church on Washington Square.  It went very well,  considering there was some last minute drama (well it is a drama) concerning casting (resolved within just hours of the reading) and sound problems.  Some of those who gave their time and effort to the reading will continue on to be in the production of the play this Fall.  The director of the reading,  Orlando Iriarte,  will direct the play with me.  He's already working on his outfit for the Tony Awards! LOL!  I want to thank him and the cast Natasha Ononobgo; Joseph Melendez; Denia Brache; Christina Laboy; Robert Gibbons; Irma Cadiz; Will Mercado; Hjordys Matos; Harvey Johnson; and Jorge Rojas for their support.  Also,  a special thanks to Jamil Mangin,  who told be about the venue,  and to Regan Giddens and Dennis Delbene for their administrative assistance.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!
